"Each summer I re-read this [as] a refresher and a reminder to the goals of a classical educator. I'm encouraged and renewed…to set out to teach the core subjects and to bring about mastery. It is easily read and models examples of how even a public school-raised mom can learn how to love learning through the classical model.” —Stacy

General Description

In this approachable book on classical education, Leigh Bortins describes the rigorous academics at the core of a solid education. The first few chapters provide an overview of classical education and its relationship to modern education. The rest of The Core provides inspiration alongside specific goals that encourage parents to lead their children through a solid academic program. Throughout the book, Bortins focuses on the first six years of a child’s education, arguing that by building a strong foundation in grammar school, students will advance more competently and confidently through higher education. This foundation consists of essential memory work, such as the multiplication tables, spelling, and the names of the American presidents.

Arguing that modern education has abandoned this crucial work of memorization, Bortins asserts that modern students may remember information, but will never possess a broad and deep understanding of the world. In an attempt to re-establish this core of knowledge, Bortins gives parents the tools and methodology to implement a rigorous, thorough, and broad curriculum based on the classical model, including rote memorization to cement knowledge; systematic learning of geography, historical facts, and timelines; reading the great books and seminal historical documents instead of adaptations and abridged editions; and rigorous training in math and the natural sciences.
