Humanistic insight and linguistic training are the goals of this integrated four-year Latin course. Time-tested and teacher endorsed, this comprehensive program is designed to lead the student systematically through the fundamentals of the language itself and on to an appreciation of selected classic texts.
Henle is a thoroughly classical text, teaching the basic elements of Latin faithfully, rigorously and in an orderly, systematic manner. With a high level of experience and knowledge, coming out of the expertise of centuries of teaching Latin in the Roman Catholic Church, Henle elegantly illustrates the Trivium: The ‘grammar' is introduced, the ‘dialectic’ is consistently stressed in a large variety of exercises, and the ‘rhetoric’ is encouraged through numerous translations of texts that are highly rhetorical—the writings of Caesar and Cicero, for example. Henle also contains many Christian stories, and explorations of Christian values (particularly teachings of Christian virtue as obtained through grace versus the ancient pagan concept of virtue), as well as tales concerning not just the ancients but more current notions of American patriotism and the fundamentals of American government. In addition, Henle provides valuable insight into the history of the Church, providing an excellent opportunity for Christians to trace their heritage back to its ancient origins.
