Saxon 8/7 is an excellent overview of all of arithmetic, the basic laws of math, and their application in beginning algebra and geometry.
Your basic assignment is to read all of the Saxon 8/7 lessons, complete all of the practice problems and watch the short video from Teaching Tapes for each lesson. The excellent Teaching Tape instructor models the best ways of thinking through a new concept and teaching it to students.
Adults tend to make light of the thoroughness of these lessons because we assume children know what we know and think how we think. What seems obvious to experienced adults is not always obvious to new students. The instructor on the Teaching Tape will help anyone improve their teaching skills.
Your assignment for your Cohort includes preparing math lessons to teach, and bringing all of your completed assignments. Discussions will center around teaching math classically - how to emphasize the language and laws of math in a classroom.
The coursework is geared to middle school students and contains 120 lessons. Estimate 60 hours of work over a three-month period.
Texts needed: Saxon 8/7 Kit and Teaching Tape 8/7 DVD set.
